Good food and ambiance

Hukilau Lanai is located at the back of a hotel, from which you can see the ocean, across a very large expanse of palm trees. They have several specialty mixed drinks. The drinks from the bar were not weak, which was a relief. The ahi nachos were a bit small but tasted good.

Food and waiter service good, manager or seating person stinks

Went here after a recommendation from our hotel next door. The food was actually pretty good. We had the locally caught fish dishes and enjoyed them. The lobster bisque was intersting. Not my favorite, but it was made with cocunut milk which i thought gave it an interesting taste. If the "butter fish" i forget the local name is on the menu, that is a must. (especially if you like chilean sea bass). Our waitress was attentive and courteous. Now, the reason i give this place average. The seating is an open air lounge, but to me it still looks a lot like a hotel lobby. What's worse is they tried to stick us at a table towards the back that was dark and had almost now view of their tiki torch lanai. It's a terrible table and should be removed. Imagine a table put in the corner where you send children for punishment and that is what it's like. If i sat there i'd never come back. After asking to be moved, they moved us to a slightly better table but wouldn't give us an empty table right next to the open windows. The seating person (possibly the manager) said "we need it for reservations". Of course as we sat and ate, no one was ever seated in that table. Further through out our meal, 4 more tables along the windows opened up. If i wasn't feeling so under the weather i'd have chewed the manager out. Anyway, to sum it up. When getting seated here, this is the one place in Kaui where you actually need to be borderline rude to the person seating you to get any kind of decent seating. And if the restaraunt reads this, please get some training for the person who makes seating decisions. They have absolutely no clue as to how to manage seating. The idea is the maximize use of your best tables, not save them for "phantom" reservations.
